Banku seller fined for selling without medical certificate

Breman Asikuma (C/R), Sept 20, GNA - A Breman Aboukwa banku seller was on Monday fined one million cedis by a Breman Asikuma magistrate's court for selling without a medical certificate. Abena Boah pleaded guilty and would go to prison for seven months if she fails to pay the fine.

Mr. Eric Pizzass Mensah, an Environmental Officer, told the court that on August 28 an environmental team saw the woman selling banku and fish without a medical certificate.

The prosecution said when Abena Boah was issued with a criminal summon to appear before the court she refused to collect it. The court issued a bench warrant and she was arrested. Passing sentence, the judge said he took into consideration the explanation she gave that she was an illiterate, a parent with little children and did not understood the English language the officers used when they talked to her.
