Barclays Bank delays services

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 13 Oct. 1998 Customers of the High street branch of the Barclays Bank in Accra were stranded this morning when the bank did not open for services. According to some workers the bank was closed because of a meeting.

The branch, which opens at 08:30 hours for normal services remained closed by 10:15 hours.

A notice posted at the various entry points said services were being delayed due to "circumstances beyond control". It added that normal work would resume later.

The notice did not elaborate but a female staff disagreed with a suggestion that they were on strike. "We are having a meeting. We'll open later," she said.

The union and management staff were not immediately available for comment. GRi
