Traders in Kumasi have voiced their opinions on President John Dramani Mahama's recent pledge to complete the stalled Kejetia Market Phase II and the Krofrom Market projects.
Their responses to the development, however, appear to be far from an expression of excitement, as they challenge the narrative surrounding the projects, according to a report by Sikaofficial on X, dated July 18, 2025.
"The funds needed for the Kejetia, Suame, and the other projects have already been released by Akufo-Addo," one of the traders said.
“Mahama did not build the Kejetia Market Phase II; it was Akufo-Addo who did. Therefore, Mahama should not receive praise for it; all the credit belongs to Akufo-Addo," another woman said.
Another primary concern by the traders revolved around the location of the projects.
"Even when Mahama passed through the Kejetia market to thank us, we didn't see him wave. He stayed inside the car, yet he claimed that the purpose of his visit to the market was to deliver his thanks to us," one trader lamented.
They assert that the initiatives were commenced under the leadership of former President Akufo-Addo and have already been fully funded.
"If Mahama can successfully complete the Kejetia Market and the Krofrom Market, I will confidently say that, if precautions aren't taken, he and his party could hold the presidential seat for a long time," a gentleman who spoke on anonymity said.
This has led to skepticism about President Mahama's motives, with many traders questioning the need to ascribe praise to the first gentleman of the land.
"Akufo-Addo deserves our gratitude for initiating the construction of the Kejetia Market Phase II and the Krofrom Market projects. Although, these projects are not yet completed, we appreciate his consideration for our needs," a trader asserted.
The situation highlights the complexities of political discourse and the importance of acknowledging the contributions of all parties involved in government projects.
Another man stated, "Although Akufo-Addo initiated this project, we are grateful. However, Mahama has promised to complete the stalled Kejetia Market Phase II and the Krofrom Market projects, and we need to express our gratitude for his consideration of Kumasi traders. The insults and criticisms will not yield any benefits. Mahama deserves recognition, just as we honour Akufo-Addo. Both leaders have significantly impacted our lives, and we should appreciate them."
Meanwhile, anticipation remains high as the people of Kumasi are keenly monitoring whether the projects will be completed as promised.
