Kumasi Central Market traders besiege KMA over allocation of Kejetia stores

Over 100 aggrieved Central Market traders on Tuesday, March 3 besieged the office of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to demand removal of what they term as ‘nuisance fence’.

The traders have accused the Assembly of fencing ‘Congo line’ an area where they operate.

The exercise which was conducted by the assembly has affected over 500 traders at Congo line within the Kumasi Central Market who have not received allocation by the assembly.

They have given the Assembly a 12-hour ultimatum to remove the fence or face their wrath.

Pure FM’s Ambassador Osei Kwadwo gathered that, Congo Line was fenced by KMA to pave way for the construction of the second phase of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project.

Some of the traders expressing their grievances to Ambassador Osei Kwadwo said

“We were informed by KMA Congo Line is not part of the exercise since the Assembly is fully aware that we’ve not received allocation yet.

Mr. Richard Oppong one of the affected traders said “KMA boss Hon Osei Assibey Antwi in a meeting informed us that before the assembly fences the area, they’ll make sure we have a good area to trade only to come to work today to see the whole place fenced.”

“The Assembly has disconnected pipes and electricity too. How do you expect us to work?” he queried.

“Osei Assibey has admitted that this very location shouldn’t have been fenced, why go ahead with it?”. Mr Isaac Yeboah, leader of the affected traders asked.

He called on authorities at the KMA to as a matter of urgency order the removal of the fence to pave way active trading to continue.
