The Minority Leader in Parliament and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed that former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, once gave him $5 million to revive his struggling business without any contractual agreement.

He described the gesture as a personal risk taken purely out of trust and friendship.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026, Afenyo-Markin recounted his longstanding relationship with Kennedy Agyapong, highlighting financial support, joint community projects and family ties.

He emphasised that their bond goes beyond politics and should not be reduced to electoral outcomes.

“When my business ran down, Kennedy gave me $5 million; we didn’t sign any agreement. He took a risk on me by giving me that money. We’re more than a family; there’s a history to it. It’s not right to cut the relationship. It’s a relationship we have. If he won in Winneba and so what? People should stop it, we have moved past that,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin explained that Kennedy Agyapong’s overwhelming victory in the NPP presidential primaries within his constituency, where he polled 644 votes compared to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s 79, was not surprising, given the extensive support Kennedy had provided to the people of Winneba over the years.

“It’s no news, he winning in Winneba. Don’t waste your time on this matter. It wasn’t because of my support.

“The gentleman, Kennedy, has been very helpful to the people of Winneba. In 2012, on election day, we didn’t have money.

“He drove from Assin to Winneba to give us money to clean up. When I won in 2012 and we were in opposition in 2013, he gave Winneba 22 brand new taxis, tear rubber. He gave us a tractor, outboard motors and later guaranteed Suzuki vehicles for the boys on work-and-pay. So, Winneba people know him,” he recounted.

The Minority Leader further disclosed that he is constructing an ICT facility in Kennedy Agyapong’s honour, a project conceived five years ago.
