CUNY'S ASA CELEBRATES AFRICA DAY

The Africa Students Association of CUNY held its Africa Day celebration recently. Led by its high powered African leaders of tomorrow destined for high positions at the United Nations which included; Yaw Appiah, President of the Council of Presidents of CUNY's University Student Senate and President of the Campus Association for Student Activities (CASA), Kissinger Anusionwu, President, the African Students Association (ASA), Tracy Owusu, ASA VP, Jackson Ude, ASA Program Coordinator and Patrick Enweronye, ASA Secretary. The event was in commemoration of the Black History Month and hosted by MC Flipman and also co-hosted by Yaw Appiah.

The Historical event at the Lehman College's Lovinger Theater was a memorable one for all attendees as the guest of honour at the event was; His Excellency; Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Advisor on Africa;dignitaries from the United Nations; Ambassador Phillipe Djangone-Bi, Permanent Representatives of Cote d?Ivoire, UN. Ambassador Aminu Wali?s represented by Deputy PR, Adenekan, Mr. Isong, Okon, Nigerian Mission and local chiefs led by Daasebre Anane Amponsah, NY Asantefuohene and their cultural troupe.

In his keynote address which touched attendees; Prof. Gambari mentioned Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as a model for the African women leaders of tomorrow and cited his happiness to see young people working together for the progress and the cause for Africa and political humanity. He also offered his praise to the The African Peer Review Mechanism as the best thing to happen to Africa. Prof. Gambari also was presented with the Life Patron Award from the African Students Association. Mr. Michael Sullivan, Director, Student Life, Lehman College offered his addresss.

There was also a Miss Africa CUNY Beauty Pageant which involved seventeen contestants respresenting all CUNY Universities i.e. Hunter, Lehman, and John Jay. The winner of Miss Africa CUNY was; Ms Justina Anusionwu. Among the award recipients were; Mr. Thomas Nyarko of the Black Star Travel and Tours; Nana Yaa Owusu-Prempeh of Tin-ifa/IFA Group Networks and Mr. Alex Kabba of African Abroad Newspaper. Music was provided by the ever popular Eric Amanful aka DJ E-love and DJ Dynamite.
