Juaso-Ashanti, April 1, GNA - A Juaso Circuit Court presided over by Mr S. K. Sarpong Appiah has sentenced a 32-year-old farmer, Kwame Owusu to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour on his own plea for possessing narcotic drug.
Police Superintendent Francis Agrippa Oppong, prosecuting said police had information that Ofoase, a farming community near Obogu had become haven for drug peddling.
He said on October 28, last year, a combined team of policemen from Juaso and Ofoase embarked on a midnight swoop which led them to the house of the accused.
The prosecution said a search conducted in the house led to the discovery of a polythene bag which contained 85 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp hidden in his room.
He said a forensic laboratory test showed that the leaves were Indian hemp, weighing 115 grammes and after investigations charged with the offence.

15 years for causing harm to his girl friend

Juaso-Ashanti, April 1, GNA - A Juaso Circuit Court has sentenced Abdul Aziz 42, a small-scale miner to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour on his own plea for stabbing his girl friend with a knife at Konongo-Odumase
Police Chief Inspector Stephen Opare, prosecuting told the court presided over by Mr S. K. Sarpong Appiah that the complainant, Mercy Donkor was the girl friend of the accused and they both lived at Konongo-Odumase.¨
He said Aziz who had two children with the complainant had for sometime been accusing her of infidelity but she had persistently denied.
The prosecution said on May 31, last year, around 2100 hours the accused went to the complainant's house and called her to meet him in the dark behind the house but she refused.
He said armed with a knife, the accused rushed into the house and stabbed her several times until she became unconscious after which he absconded.
The prosecution said the complainant was rushed to Agogo Presbyterian Hospital where she was admitted for several weeks. He said the accused who went into hiding was, however, arrested later when the police had information that he was living at Nkasiem in Brong Ahafo Region and after investigations charged with the offence.

Ice-cream vendor jailed 7 years for rape

Kumasi, April 1, GNA - Richard Owusu 18, an ice-cream vendor was on Monday sentenced to 84 months imprisonment in hard labour on his own plea for defiling a 16-year-old class six pupil.
His accomplice Kojo Poku, a barber pleaded guilty to conspiracy but sentence was deferred to April 20 and remanded in prison custody. Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei, prosecuting told the court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that the victim lived together with her siblings at Maakro in Kumasi where the two accused persons spend the night after their day's work in a wooden structure. She said the victim and one of her siblings who also assisted a food vendor in the vicinity on March 23 this year, while returning home after their work, met the two accused persons who offered to accompany them home.
The prosecution said the girls who decided to watch a movie were convinced by the accused persons to follow them to their wooden structure to watch a video.
She said the girls obliged and when they were watching the movie, Owusu asked victim's sister to fetch water at a nearby place and as soon as she left, they stripped the victim naked and Owusu defiled her several times.
The prosecution said after Owusu had finished, Poku wanted to have his turn, but her sister entered with the bucket of water. She said shocked by what she had seen, she raised the alarm which attracted Nana Addae, Gyaasehene of Maakro who called the police and they arrested the accused persons and after investigations charged with the offences.
The prosecution said a medical form issued to the victim later indicated that she had been defiled.

Man jailed 10 years for snatching a handbag Kumasi

, April 1, GNA - A 20-year-old driver's mate, Yaw Kwadwo Salifu has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour on his own plea for robbing a woman of her handbag.
Police Chief Inspector Nana Amofa told the court presided over by Mr Eric Baah that, on March 28, 2009 at about 1700 hours the complainant who is a trader at Kumasi Central Market was trailed by the accused when she was waiting to board a car home.
He said when the complainant was adjusting her baby on her back, she handed over her handbag to her five-year-old child who was with her, and the accused immediately snatched the handbag and took to his heels. The prosecution said the complainant raised the alarm which attracted people around who chased the accused and arrested to the police. He said a search on him revealed a locally manufactured gun and a jack-knife, after investigations was charged with the offence.

30 days For Wife Beater

Kade, April 1, GNA - A man who had lived with a woman without performing any marriage rites but who mercilessly beat her on suspicion of having an affair with a Pastor who was treating her of an ailment has been sentenced to 30 days in prison by the Kade District Magistrate Court.
