Justice Senyo Dzamefe backs asset declaration for judges

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has emphasised the importance of asset declaration by judges, aligning them with the obligations of other government appointees.

He asserted that members of the judiciary must comply with this constitutional requirement.

Justice Dzamefe made these remarks during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday June 16, 2025.

He stressed that judges should not be exempt from the constitutional mandate to declare their assets.

"If the law states that all government appointees should declare their assets, and judges are government appointees, why not? They have to declare their assets," he stated.

Justice Dzamefe believes that requiring asset declarations from judges would enhance transparency and accountability within the judiciary.

When asked whether he had complied with this requirement, he replied affirmatively, "Yes, Mr. Chairman."

His comments highlight growing public concerns about ethical standards and potential conflicts of interest among public officials, emphasising the need for transparency within the judiciary.

Justice Dzamefe’s position on asset declaration aligns with calls from civil society organisations and legal reform advocates who have long pushed for greater openness in the judiciary as part of broader governance reforms.

His vetting is part of a series of hearings for Supreme Court nominees, following recent appointments by President John Dramani Mahama.
