Retired Supreme Court judge, Justice William Anaan Atuguba, in a recent interview with the Law Lab, opened up on some details of his personal life.

One of the things the legal luminary discussed was having a polygamous father, whom he nearly sued when he became a lawyer, and how he himself nearly took the steps of his father.

Justice William Atuguba, who indicated he and one of his sisters were the only survivors of his many siblings, said that his “father was a true polygamist.”

The retired Supreme Court judge initially said that he is not a polygamist like his father, “because of the education,” before adding, “somewhere down there I had a short brush of it.”

He cautioned men against polygamy, saying, “I won’t advise anybody” to go into that kind of marriage, as he shook his head.

He explained that polygamous marriages were very common during his father's era because people wanted more children to help them with their farms.

He added that women at the time also often brought their sisters to join their marriages.

“It's not necessarily, but if you are lucky, like my father was lucky. When we were growing up, I found that he had three wives… those days, women who loved their husbands could bring their younger sisters or their family to enjoy.”

The retired Supreme Court justice said that he himself had seven children, but his first was born in 2025.

He also narrated how he wanted to become a Catholic priest, but his father dismissed his dream without question.
