Headmasters condemed for collecting bribe

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, the Reverend Professor Addo-Obeng on Sunday condemned the collection of bribes by headmasters of senior secondary schools from parents before offering admission to their children.

This situation, he said, had become a "deadly blow" to most of the parents, who wanted their children admitted into secondary schools.

Rev Prof Addo-Obeng said this in a sermon at the induction service of Mr Ebenezer K.T. Osam as the 10th Headmaster of Swedru Secondary School at Agona Swedru.

He said the collection of bribes from parents had become an open secret and a source of worry to the people and cautioned them to desist from the practice.

"In this era of positive change and the ongoing campaign of zero tolerance for corruption, headmasters must stop the practice and focus on visions that will transform the schools," he said.

He said some headmasters demanded between one million cedis and five million cedis from parents before admitting their wards, saying that did not help education to grow.

Rev Prof Addo-Obeng said people in high positions in the government who collected bribe before offering contracts and jobs to people should stop forthwith.

Mr Osam said he would run an open and transparent administration to transform the Swedru Secondary School into one of the best schools in the Central Region.
