The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has asked the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), to be thankful to President John Mahama for treating them with kids cloves in the corruption fight.
In his estimation, the president has opted to prioritise development over aggressively pursuing corrupt officials from the past government.
He noted that if he were president of the country, most corrupt appointees from the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government would have fled the country.
“When I see my brothers [NPP] making noise, I feel sad. They should thank President Mahama. If President John Mahama was not president today…and you had someone like me, half of the NPP people would have left the country by now,” he said on Starr FM on April 11, 2025.
He was, however, quick to add that the corruption fight would be within the ambit of the law.
“I don’t believe in malicious communication. I also don’t believe in destroying somebody’s image. Whatever I tell you is what I know of you. So, President Mahama has tried to situate himself in the middle. He’s not being soft, but he believes in prioritisation.
“He believes that yes, the country is destroyed half way… We can be dealing with ourselves, but who takes care of the steer; in terms of driving the nation forward?” he said.
He explained that President Mahama’s posture is guided by the urgent need to prioritise development and growth and for the singular reason, ‘corrupt’ former officials must be grateful to him.
