A private legal practitioner and lecturer at UNIMAC-IJ, Zakaria Tanko Musah, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to be transparent in the investigation relating to Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, who was allegedly assaulted by the Special Operations Team of the Ghana Police Service, also known as the Black Maria.

His call follows the IGP’s instruction for an investigation to be conducted into the incident.

Reacting to the news on GTV on Monday, March 23, 2026, Musah urged the IGP to ensure transparency in the process, adding that no one should be shielded.

“Well, they have given their side of the story based on facts that are secret. I mean, they said because yes, I mean, on the face of it, you know and you look at social media, they said the Black Maria were the ones accused of what happened. But we are aware that the Black Maria were withdrawn from the northern region recently.

"...so, it then becomes a bit of a dichotomy as to how they stayed in Tamale to conduct that.You would understand why the police would come in, and in terms of public relations, it’s very important for them to at least set the basic facts right. But of course, their denial would not end there. That is why the investigation is being conducted.

"For me, what I would say is that the investigation should be transparent and open so that nobody is shielded,” he said.

When asked, as a lawyer, if he believes the artist’s claims that he was assaulted by the Black Maria, Tanko said, “But in terms of what you said, whether what he said is believable or not. As a lawyer, sometimes we don't judge; we don't jump into believing what people say. There's a maxim in law or a theory called, you know, “the story speaks for itself.”

“You saw him there. You saw the bloodied face and all those things. But that is what we have seen.”
