"Ghano-American" Arrested

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Police on Friday said Riad Hozaifeh, who possesses both Ghanaian and American passports was arrested for possessing firearms without authority and posing as a public officer.

A statement signed by the Director of CID, Mr David Asante-Apeatu said the suspect's premises were searched and he was later brought to the Police Headquarters for further investigation.

It said Raid "admitted he was issued with a pistol and an AK 47 assault rifle during the PNDC and NDC era in his capacity as a top government official. During the period, he also enjoyed varied privileges including free accommodation at Labone Estates, free of fleet of vehicles and fuel, free utility services and was issued with a Ghanaian diplomatic passport."

The Police Administration said it "would want to emphasize that the investigation has nothing to do with the current Reconciliation process." The statement said Riad had been granted self-recognizance bail while investigation continues.
