I was destined to become a leader – NAPO shares his leadership upbringing

The running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has revealed that he was raised in a politically active family.

According to him, many of his relatives served in various public service roles and gained prominence both in Ghana and beyond.

The former Minister of Energy noted that some of his family members were involved in partisan politics and established notable reputations, which significantly shaped his upbringing.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Personality Profile on July 17, 2025, NAPO indicated that his background has well-equipped him to become a leader who makes a positive impact.

“I would say that’s how I was brought up. I was brought up in a very politically aware family with a history of decades of partisan politics or active political life. I was brought up to cherish one thing; public service. And not only public service, but bringing value through public service.

“For public service, it means you don’t just participate; you participate in terms of regular impact. That’s how I was brought up, brought up to prove myself that I can sit at the table with decision-makers, and not only with the elderly, but as a true decision-maker,” he said.

The former Manhyia South MP further stated that he believes he is destined to serve the public in various capacities, a path he has followed since his youth.

“So, growing up, public service has been a duty that has been imprinted in my heart, mind, and everything I do. Even deciding which associations to belong to, all the associations I joined were those that brought public service to the fore,” he added.
