CAF salutes Globacom

Accra, March 7, GNA - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has commended Globacom, organizers of the annual prestigious African Footballer of the Year Award for staging a fabulous show at the Accra International Conference Centre in Ghana on Thursday, March 1. Globacom sponsored the 2006 GLO-CAF Awards last Thursday and was the first time the event has come to Ghana.

The CAF Executive Committee, led by Issa Hayatou, President of the continental body expressed satisfaction with the ceremony at its meeting held at the plush Alisa Hotel only 24 hours after the event. Hayatou expressed his contentment with the general organization of the event that named Ivorian Didier Drogba as the Footballer of the Year.

He commended Dr Mike Adenuga, Chairman of Globacom for putting up a great show to elevate African football.

Dr Adenuga was bestowed with the CAF Order of Merit, the highest award given to one extraordinary person at the CAF level at the ceremony.

Hayatou told the GNA Sports that 93this man has not relented in his drive to see African football grow.

Through his brand - Globacom, African football has grown to yet another dimension".

He added that 93The company has taken football sponsorship to another level, offering hope to footballers back in Africa that they can reach great heights if corporate bodies all over the continent emulate what Globacom is doing".

Globacom, a giant cellular company in Nigeria has its employees cut across different nationalities including Ghanaians.

Meanwhile President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria has also commended President Hayatou and Dr Adenuga for their special roles towards the organization of the awards.

"They have both dedicated themselves to further uniting the nations of Africa through the instrumentality of the meaningful engagement of our youths, the expansion of communication capacities, and employment opportunities for all".

Ghana's President John Agyekum Kufuor was bestowed with the platinum award that recognizes a nation's outstanding support for football on the African continent Ghana's Black Stars pipped the Pharoahs of Egypt and the Elephants of Cote D'Ivoire to the National Team of the Year award. The event which marked the 50th anniversary of CAF also coincided with Ghana's 50th Independence anniversary
