Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has publicly questioned the adequacy of funding allocated to the agency, describing GH¢60,000 for 66 offices over three months as insufficient.

Speaking on Accra-based Adom FM on Thursday, September 17, 2026, Opoku questioned how the department could be expected to operate effectively with just GH¢60,000 allocated to run 66 Rent Control offices across the country for three months.

“Can you imagine? How do I sit at Rent Control, and then you come and give me quarter funding, GH¢60,000 to run sixty-six Rent Control offices for three months? What do you mean?” he asked.

He further urged Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and other government officials to reconsider their priorities, stressing that housing concerns are central to the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

“This is the heart of the people, so you cannot be dishing out money to other places when you don’t even care about where the people sleep. How do you expect Rent Control to function?” Opoku quizzed.

His remarks come amid growing public concern over rent hikes and the dollarisation of rent payments, with many citizens calling for stronger institutional support to address Ghana’s housing challenges.
