Here's when MahamaCares nationwide rollout begins

Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adwoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has stated that the initiative is expected to launch operations nationwide by June 2026.

During her address at the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on Monday, May 11, she stated that the programme aims to ensure that no Ghanaian is denied access to specialised healthcare due to financial difficulties, as reported by adomonline.com on May 11, 2026.

To date, over GH¢4.8 million has been spent on 50 beneficiaries who received support at the piloting stage for various medical procedures, including heart surgeries, brain surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and orthopaedic surgeries.

These patients, aged between six months and 85 years, were treated across 11 hospitals nationwide.

“The nationwide Patient Support Programme officially rolls out in June 2026,” Darko-Opoku confirmed.

The Board of Trustees has approved an initial benefits package that includes coverage for various cancers, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and childhood cancers like leukaemia and lymphoma.

Additional medical conditions may be included in the programme by the end of the year.

“These beneficiaries received support for heart surgeries, brain surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and orthopaedic surgeries,” Darko-Opoku added.

She indicated that for a person to qualify for the programme, applicants must be Ghanaian citizens, active NHIS cardholders, and diagnosed with conditions that are approved under the scheme.

She added that applications will be processed digitally through specialist clinicians at designated hospitals, rather than through walk-ins at the Secretariat.
