The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has visited the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) following a clash at its Emergency Department that was captured in a viral social media video.
The confrontation involved relatives of an accident victim and medical staff, reportedly over alleged delays in treating a critically injured patient.
The situation, which escalated into the assault of a nurse, compelled hospital management to call in the Ghana Police Service to restore order.

In a statement on Monday, August 18, 2025, the Head of Public Relations at the hospital, Juliana Haruna, explained that the incident occurred while staff were managing multiple emergencies.
“The Emergency Department of GARH is one of the busiest in the country, receiving multiple cases daily. At the time of the incident, clinicians were actively attending to other emergencies when relatives and friends of the accident victim invaded the emergency triage,” the statement read.
The hospital further noted, “Their overwhelming presence disrupted the smooth delivery of care, caused unnecessary tension, and even threatened the safety of our clinicians. In the process, one of our dedicated nurses was assaulted. This unacceptable act resulted in a temporary halt in service delivery.”
