Headmistress narrates how student who passed BECE couldn't write own name

The Headmistress of Ahantaman Girls Senior High School (SHS), Ernestina Kankam, has raised concerns about the quality of candidates and their performance being produced in the final exams, revealing that some students engage in examination malpractices.

Detailing how these issues are undermining the integrity of the examination process and affecting students’ learning abilities, she highlighted a case of a student who had excelled in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) but could not even write her own name.

According to her, in a viral interview with Beach FM, Kankam narrated that although the student had scored an aggregate of 14 in the BECE, she could only manage to scribble on an exam paper and could not construct a sentence correctly, an incident that was brought to her attention by a subject teacher.

She revealed that a further probe into the student’s performance showed that she had received assistance during the BECE, with a teacher reportedly writing the exams on her behalf.

“I have a particular example of just those who wrote, a student that came in from [writing] BECE with an aggregate of 14, who couldn't write her name. I mean, those who just finished, who could not write her name and she had [aggregate] 14. I was there when the economics teacher brought me her exam paper and when he came in with the academic assistant, he said there was a problem. I thought there’s something serious,” she recounted.

The headmistress continued saying, “They came and said 'this one, we can't solve it', so he handed the paper to me. She had scribbled. I mean, she can't write a single sentence correctly but she had aggregate 14. When we had delved into it, according to her, a teacher wrote it for her.

“Of course, she couldn't have written that herself, because I mean, with cheating [apor], you should have come in with something that somebody adds on, then you produce whatever but with this kind of performance, someone who cannot even write a name correctly, it meant that it was written for her. And she confessed that a teacher called Takyi wrote it for her and I'd always wanted to really follow up but couldn't have the time so that was serious.”
