Five soccer fans arraigned before court

Sunyani, (B/A) Nov. 13, GNA - Five supporters of Ashanti Gold Football Club (Ashgold) were on Monday put before a Sunyani Magistrates court for causing damage to plastic chairs belonging to the National Sports Council (NSC) at the Sunyani Coronation Park. The supporters made up of Thomas Arhinful, Kwame Yeboah, Frank Amankwaah, Yaw Asamoah Tweneboah and Newton Abekah pleaded not guilty to the charges of causing unlawful damage, assault and causing harm and were granted 20 million cedis bail each to reappear on November 27, this year.

A sixth suspect, Kwadwo Tweneboah could not appear before the court because he is on admission at the Regional hospital with injuries. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Martin Dafeamekpor told the court, presided over by Mr. Albert Zoogah that on Sunday, November 12 this year, there was a football match between King Faisal Football club and Ashgold at the Sunyani Coronation Park. He said some supporters of Ashgold became aggrieved with the result after their team lost 1-2 to King Faisal and started destroying the plastic chairs at the Park and attacked and seriously wounded two policemen who went in to stop the carnage.

A Police reinforcement managed to restore peace and order and arrested six of the supporters who were consequently charged with the offence.

ASP Dafeamekpor said the injured Policemen, Constable Felix Danquah and Corporal Adu were treated and discharged at the Regional hospital.
