The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has revealed the government’s plans to disburse an amount of GH¢4 billion for payments to road contractors to resume work on stalled road projects across the country.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Kwame Agbodza provided a timeline for the disbursement of funds, stating that payments will begin later this month.
He noted that the GH¢4 billion allocation would go toward settling part of the government’s estimated GH¢21 billion debt owed to road contractors
“On record, we are intending to pay some GHC4 billion towards retiring part of the 21 billion from this month. I have no doubt that will be on record to be one of the biggest payments at a particular time to make sure that we are serious about clearing the debt and then also making provision to start the new work we are talking about,” he disclosed.
Agbodza’s statement aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s recent pledge to settle outstanding debts owed to road contractors.
“On the bigger issue of how do we address the payment to contractors since we have already admitted. If you listened to His Excellency the President of the Republic yesterday, he indicated that towards the end of this month, the finance minister would be taking steps to retire some of the debt owed contractors so that they can go back to the site and complete the work,” he said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing road infrastructure challenges and completing stalled projects, assuring the public that the administration is determined to get the job done.
“It is not appropriate for us to basically sit unconcerned for this to happen since we have very scarce resources. It is very clear that the finance minister was doing the right thing by making sure that when we have certificates at Road Fund, those certificates are not repeated in the books of the Ghana government at another level, where we end up paying twice for the same project. There's no doubt that government is committed and will continue to prioritize paying for road works done,” he concluded.
