The Chairperson of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, Abena Osei Asare, has disclosed that the government's economic management will be tested when the ongoing IMF deal comes to an end.

According to her, despite the successes chalked up by the incumbent NDC government in its first year, long-term sustainability should be their priority.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Osei Asare emphasised that given the current inflationary trends and macroeconomic indicators, the government needs to shore up its reserves beyond the IMF programme to sustain long-term growth.

“Clearly, they are fast-forwarding the reforms that we put in place. I am happy that they are following those reforms, and that is what is yielding results. The most important thing is to sustain this beyond the IMF programme,” she said.

She added that the fear of retrogression looms after the IMF programme if the government does not go beyond the usual approach in upholding and maintaining long-term macroeconomic sustainability.

“That is where the fear lies — beyond the IMF programme, have they put in buffers, systems, and strategies that will uphold or maintain what they have achieved? For me, I am happy with what they are doing. I would say the real test will come after they exit the IMF programme and we see what they have put in place to sustain it,” she added.

The IMF Executive Board is expected to review Ghana's fifth programme review in early December 2025, following a staff-level agreement reached in October 2025.

The review will consider the approval of a disbursement of approximately $385 million, a key step toward Ghana's economic stability and support for upcoming debt service payments in early 2026.
