Trader and carpenter get eight years jail sentences for stealing

Kumasi, July 28, GNA - A trader and a carpenter who broke into the Believers Gospel church at Adoato in the Kumasi metropolis and stole its public address system valued at three million cedis, were on Tuesday sentenced to four years imprisonment each by a Kumasi circuit court. The convicts, Kofi Mensah and Joe Afan, all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal, causing unlawful damage, unlawful entry and stealing.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Evelyn Addo told the court, presided over by Mr. Adutwum Mmorosa that at about 3.40 am on July 10, this year, the two persons broke into the church and stole the public address system and packed them into a taxi. She said, however, that luck eluded them as the police patrol team on the Bohyen road intercepted them. Chief Inspector Addo said one of the accomplices, managed to escape when the patrol team stopped the taxi in which they were conveying the stolen items.

The prosecution said the two accused persons and the taxi driver were sent to the Buffalo Unit where the two confessed to stealing the items and that the driver was innocent since they only hired him to convey the items. Based upon their own statement, she said, they were charged with the offences and the items released to the church.
