Anim Gets Ghana's Second Gold

Bambous, Mauritius ? Africa's fastest women of 2006, Vida Anim, added a second gold to Ghana's tally on the second day of the Africa Championships in the women's 100m at the Germain Commarmond Stadium on Thursday.

The race was run into a headwind of 3.8m/s which meant times were not going to be fast. Vida won in 11.58sec. Geraldine Pillay (South Africa) and Endurance Ojokolo (Nigeria) had to settle for silver and bronze respectively

Elsewhere Eric Nkansah (10.65) only managed a bronze in the 100m, as he was beaten by Olusoji Fasuba - the African record holder - and Uchenna Emedolu both of Nigeria.

Ghana?s medal tally is currently two golds and a bronze. World Indoor and Commonwealth champion, Ignatius Gaisah, won the country?s first gold medal in the men?s long jump event, jumping a new national record of 8.51m last Wednesday.

The wins also give Anim and Gaisah the chance to represent Africa at the World Cup to be staged in Athens in September and the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan, next year.

Ghana now has 2 golds and a bronze.

Meanwhile, Omar El-Ghazaly, ensured Egypt retained the lead on the overall medal table with a total of three golds when he led teammate Ibrahim Yassar Fathy in a 1-2 Egyptian finish in the men's Discus Throw.

Other winners yesterday were in the women's events, Nigerian Toyin Augustus (100m Hurdles), Tunisia's Syrine Balti (Pole Vault), Louis van Zyl (400m Hurdles), Ethiopia's Meseret Defar (5000m) and Cameroon's Josephine Bikie Mbarga (Long Jump). Tunisian Mourad Souissi won the men's Decathlon.
