The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has expressed concern over what he describes as the growing normalisation of nepotism in public recruitment.
In a viral video from a public function, Asiedu Nketiah lamented how merit is increasingly sidelined in favor of connections, relationships, and bribery.
“Recruitment has now turned into something they call protocol, whether into the security services, public service, or anywhere. Ghanaians are beginning to forget about merit. It’s all about who you know, and at times it even starts at the National Service level, whose brother will be placed where, whose party member will be placed where,” he said.

He further cautioned that the practice has become so pervasive that it is creeping into the selection and election of national leaders.
“So that is the characteristic of the country you are going to try to change. Even when it comes to leadership selection, it becomes about voting for my tribesman or voting for someone perceived as ‘generous,’” he noted.
Widely deemed a case of corruption, nepotism, and abuse of office, “protocol recruitment” continues to raise concerns about the declining quality of Ghana’s public service.

Despite repeated denials from some current and former government officials, media investigations and prosecutions have revealed evidence of the practice’s persistence.
