The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hinted at plans being developed by the ministry to reintegrate deportees into society upon their return to the country.
Addressing the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 13, 2025, Ablakwa indicated that his office is in consultation with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other stakeholders to provide various forms of support for the deportees.
He stated that options being considered include equipping them with training skills, among other initiatives.
“The Ministry is in discussion with NADMO and other partners, including the International Organisation for Migration, to extend support in reintegration and providing additional sources of livelihood to our compatriots upon arrival,” he stated.
Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, further added that psychological assistance will be provided to help these individuals reintegrate into society.
The support aims to ensure they feel connected to society and do not feel alienated due to their predicaments.
“Options include arranging skills training, microfinancing opportunities, and psychological support to help individuals reintegrate into the society and rebuild their livelihoods.
“Additionally, we will work with local authorities and communities to ensure that those returning are supported in their readmission into society to enable them to contribute to their communities,” he said.
Meanwhile, the minister has assured the House that the individuals, based on assessment, do not pose any threats to the country.
He was responding to concerns about the criminal records of the 150 Ghanaians to be deported by the US government.
"These are hardworking, decent people," he told Parliament.
He also indicated that the cost of deportation for the affected individuals is being taken care of by the US government, while assuring the House that his ministry remains committed to protecting the dignity of the affected individuals and ensuring their smooth reintegration into Ghanaian communities.
