The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has warned that Ghana’s laws will be enforced rigorously against foreigners who attempt to acquire Ghanaian passports through illegal means.
He said the government has tightened security measures and invested in technology to prevent abuse of the passport system, assuring Ghanaians that attempts by foreigners to obtain the country’s passport fraudulently will be swiftly detected and punished.
“Ghanaians are concerned that we need to improve security and make sure that foreigners do not acquire our passport and undermine the gains that we have made,” Ablakwa said, assuring all Ghanaians that foreigners who attempt this will have a tough time.

He added that mechanisms have been put in place to promptly apprehend offenders when they attempt to circumvent the system.
The foreign affairs minister was speaking on December 31, 2025, at the commissioning of a Passport Application Centre in the Savannah Region.
He noted that additional security measures have been deployed, particularly at the borders, to monitor and prevent foreigners from infiltrating areas such as Damongo to illegally acquire passports.
“We will mount the needed checks,” he emphasised.

Touching on the treatment of Ghanaians abroad, Ablakwa reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of all Ghanaians living outside the country, amid reports of attacks and abuse in some parts of the world.
The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Bi-Awuribe, welcomed the establishment of the Passport Application Centre, describing it as a major relief for residents who previously had to travel long distances to access passport services.
He disclosed that the Regional Coordinating Council has allocated two acres of land for the construction of a main passport office in the region as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and service delivery.
As part of the commissioning ceremony, seven applicants received their passports directly from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and his delegation.
