President John Dramani Mahama has expressed optimism in Ghana electing a female president in the near future.
President Mahama made this remark while speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing on October 12, 2025.
He emphasised that Ghana’s progress in empowering women in leadership positions is a clear indication that the country is ready for a female head of state.
“…in my capacity as the African Union champion for gender and women's empowerment, the government of Ghana has continued to take decisive steps to mainstream gender across our national development policies. We've achieved historic milestones, including the election of Ghana's first female vice president and the unprecedented appointment of women to leadership positions in government- the judiciary, the security services, and key national institutions.

“These are not just symbolic gestures. They are affirmation that women deserve a seat at the table of the highest levels of decision making. And I am confident that in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and [there] will be a woman president of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.
The Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women forms part of activities marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, organised by the UN and held in Beijing.
While in Beijing to champion women’s empowerment, President Mahama and his delegation also focused on strengthening Sino-Ghanaian ties and promoting investment opportunities.
The president was accompanied by the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, as well as officials from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Free Zones Authority, and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority.
The team is expected to visit Fujian Province to engage businesses with operations in Ghana.
The engagements aim to deepen the long-standing partnership between Ghana and China and promote greater cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
