'Ghana set to welcome 40 additional deportees from the US' - Ablakwa

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has indicated that 40 more deportees will soon arrive in the country from the United States of America (USA).

This announcement has attracted criticism regarding the government's approach to receiving deportees.

During an interview on Channel One TV's The Point of View on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Ablakwa indicated that more deportees are expected in the country.

"I can disclose that we’re expecting another 40 in the next few days, but we vet them before they arrive," he said.

The Minority in Parliament recently criticised the government for accepting 14 deportees earlier this month, accusing officials of bypassing parliamentary approval.

However, the government, in response to the criticisms, explained that its agreement with the US is based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which does not necessitate parliamentary approval.

"We didn’t agree to this out of support for President Trump’s immigration policies. This isn’t about doing the US a favour; it’s about giving our fellow Africans a chance for refuge and hope. We want them to return home and feel at ease," he added.

The minister emphasised that Ghana's decision to accept the deportees is purely based on humanitarian reasons, and that the decision was made after seeing the harsh and inhumane treatment of deportees overseas.

"We stood with them in solidarity when we saw those images—the arrests, the violation of their rights, and their forced detention," he said.

"It seems nobody wants to accept them. This decision was entirely humanitarian; we did not gain any financial benefits. We are doing this to maintain Ghana's reputation as the Mecca for Africans," Ablakwa remarked.
