The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has joined Ghanaians in celebrating the country’s 69th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s territorial waters and advancing the growth of the maritime sector.

In a message to commemorate the anniversary of Ghana’s Independence, the authority paid tribute to the vision and sacrifices of the country’s founding leaders, whose efforts secured freedom for the nation.

The GMA noted that Ghana’s progress since independence reflects the resilience, determination, and unity of its people.

It added that the country’s maritime sector has evolved significantly over the years, transforming from the coastal trading activities of the former Gold Coast into a key gateway for commerce and economic development.

According to the authority, it remains firmly committed to its mandate of ensuring maritime safety, protecting Ghana’s territorial waters, and supporting the growth of the blue economy.

“At the GMA, we remain steadfast in our mandate to safeguard our territorial waters, promote the blue economy, and ensure Ghana’s leadership in maritime safety and security within the West African sub-region,” the statement said.

The GMA further emphasised that while independence was won on land, the nation must remain vigilant in protecting its maritime domain.

“As we fly the flag high, we are reminded that the freedom won on land must be protected at sea,” the GMA stated.
