MOFA to build modern fish processing centre

Tema Manhean, March 1, GNA - The Ministry of Food and Agriculture will soon build a modern fish processing centre at Tema so that fish would be processed under hygienic conditions.

Mr Emmanuel Nii Aryee, Tema Municipal Agricultural Officer, who announced this in Tema on Sunday, said the facility would be well equip to process quality fish to meet local and international standards. He was inaugurating the "Adom Ladies Fish Mongers Co-operative Society" at Tema Manhean.

Mr Aryee said the Ministry was seeking funds from the Farmer Based Organisation Development Fund, under the Agriculture Services Sub-Sector Investment Programme (ASSIP), to execute the project, which was expected to begin before the end of the year.

He said poor handling of fish at the various stages of production, affected the export of fish and fish products. Madam Rebecca Adu, President of the five society, appealed to the Ministry to grant loans to members to enable them to expand their business.

Mr Godwin Gogovi, Municipal Co-operative Officer handed over the certificate of operation to the society.
