Sawmiller remanded for raping ex-wife

Kumasi, Sept. 7, GNA - The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly court has remanded Kwabena Tuffour, a 42-year-old sawmiller for allegedly raping, physically assaulting and threatening to kill his ex-wife, an auxiliary nurse at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Tuffour, who was appearing in court for the second time, was refused bail despite an application by his counsel.

His plea was also not taken since investigations into the case has still not come to a conclusion and will re-appear on September 21. Briefing the court, Police Chief Inspector Wilfred Kojo Salia told the court that the complainant, who until about two-and-a-half years ago was married to Tuffour, lived at Mpatasie while accused also lived at Kwadaso following a separation.

He said Tuffour, who apparently could not stand the heartaches resulting from the break, decided to take vengeance on the lady and therefore hatched a plan.

On the fateful day, August 19, this year, Tuffour stealthily entered the lady's room without knocking, locked the door and threw the key under the bed.

The prosecution said accused then gagged the lady with clothes, tied her hands to her back and forcibly had several bouts of sex with her.

Not satisfied, he hit complainant head against the wall several times and then kicked her in the ribs with both legs. Chief Inspector Salia said the lady's screams attracted her co-tenants who tried several times in vain to implore Tuffour to open the door.

The sympathisers who could no longer stand the shrill screams of the lady then forced the door open and found to their consternation, the lady with hands tied behind, naked and half conscious on the floor. The lady was then rushed to KATH where she was resuscitated and has since been on admission.

Tuffour was apprehended and sent to the Suame police where, after investigations was put before court. 07 Sept. 06
