Armed robbers shoot KNUST student

Kumasi, Dec. 29, GNA - A 17-year-old first-year student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was on the early hours of Tuesday, December 26, shot in the chest by four armed robbers when they stormed his father's residence at Twumduase near KNUST in Kumasi. The boy whose name has been withheld was first rushed to the KNUST Hospital and later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where he was admitted and three bullets removed from his chest. The armed robbers however, bolted with 55 million cedis cash, two mobile phones and personal belongings worth over 30 million.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, Mr Joe Bio, Ashanti Regional Internal Auditor of Ghana Education Service (GES) and father of the student, said around 0200 hours on Tuesday while asleep, he heard several gunshots in his house and being suspicious, he woke up and came to the living room, his son emerged from his bedroom and joined him in the living room. He then told his son to return to his bedroom and before the son could move one of the armed robbers standing on his veranda shot throw the louvers hitting his son's chest and he fell down.

Mr Bio said he quickly held the student and carried him to the bedroom and later managed to send his wife and daughter to where the student was lying. He said soon afterwards the armed robbers managed to break into the living room and at gunpoint, picked the mobile phones and ordered him to bring all the foreign currency in the house. Mr Bio said they then marched him and the family into a bathroom, locked them up and took away cash and valuable properties before they bolted. He said he later forced the bathroom door to open and raised the alarm and with the assistance of other residents sent the student to KNUST hospital. The KNUST police when contacted confirmed the incident and said investigation was on-going.
