NDC cautions against "419 politicians"

Accra, July 17, GNA - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday cautioned members to beware of "419 politicians" who were forming other political parties to draw them into it.

In a statement in Accra, Mr Fifi Kwetey, National Propaganda Secretary, said politicians were desperately using illegal antics and tricks to deceive and poach NDC members and followers in particular into those parties.

The statement said these operations were going on in towns and villages adding, "Typically, the letter contains a declaration of defection or resignation from the NDC, purported to have been made by a group of people, usually NDC followers or supporters."

It said these people informed people of the formation of a group of financial nongovernmental organizations which would provide support for needy individuals or small businesspersons who signed up to become members.

"They are further told that (they) will receive a specified amount of money immediately upon signing up, and promised bigger amounts in the future which some people often find very difficult to resist. "We in the NDC are fully determined to protect our members, Ghana's infant democracy and indeed the entire Ghanaian polity=85=94 it said and urged the Electoral Commission, national Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) and the enlightened civil society, particularly democracy advocacy groups, to watch the development.
