The Presiding Bishop of Victory Bible Churches Worldwide, Bishop N.A. Tackie-Yarboi, has suggested that it would be prudent to extend Ghana’s four-year presidential term limit to six years.

According to him, such an extension would give governments the freedom to take bold decisions without fear, knowing they have more time in office.

The clergyman explained that the current four-year limit is problematic because incumbent governments are often forced to campaign for re-election, which affects their decision-making.

Speaking in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, Bishop Tackie-Yarboi noted that a six-year presidential tenure would provide enough time for political parties to fulfill their manifesto promises.

“Every four years is too short. I wish we could change it, just like President Kufuor suggested, extend it to six years. If you go for four years, you’re campaigning, and there are things you cannot decide firmly because you’ll have to come back and campaign again,” he said.

However, he cautioned that giving political parties too much time in office could also make them complacent and lead to poor governance.

“Whether it’s eight years or four, somebody has to go for another to come, because the enemy of success is perceived success. We tend to get comfortable when we’re in political power,” he added.

The call for a longer presidential term has been part of an ongoing debate in Ghana, with some arguing that extending the four-year limit would help governments effectively deliver on their promises.
