The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the passing of one of its founding members and former National Chairman Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes.
In a statement signed by National Chairman John Boadu on October 7, 2026, the party noted that it expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former diplomat and statesman, describing him as a distinguished patriot and one of the pillars of the NPP.
According to the statement, the late Ambassador Odoi-Sykes dedicated several decades of his life to public service, democratic governance and the development of Ghana.
The statement further detailed how the late founding NPP member served as a Member of Parliament for Ashiedu Keteke, now Odododiodioo, during the Third Republic before subsequently becoming Minority Leader of Parliament.
The NPP also noted that he distinguished himself through his parliamentary leadership and advocacy for democratic ideals during his time in Parliament, adding that his passing is a big blow to the political party.
“His passing marks the end of an illustrious chapter in Ghana’s political history. The nation has lost a distinguished public servant, while the New Patriotic Party has lost one of its most respected elder statesmen and steadfast architects,” the statement said.
The statement further noted that his leadership contributed to the party’s historic electoral victory in 2000, which resulted in the first democratic transfer of power between political parties under the Fourth Republic.
According to the party, he represented Ghana with distinction during his diplomatic assignment and contributed to strengthening the country’s relations with Canada.
The NPP described his integrity, humility, intellect and commitment to Ghana’s democratic development as qualities that would continue to inspire generations.
The party extended its condolences to his wife, children, the Odoi-Sykes family, friends, associates and all who are mourning his death.
It also prayed for strength, comfort and fortitude for the bereaved family during the difficult period.
“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life exceptionally lived in faithful service to God, country, and the Party. Ambassador Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes has indeed paid his dues, and his legacy of principled leadership, patriotism, and selfless service will forever remain etched in the annals of Ghana’s democratic history,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the late Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes is survived by his wife, Edith Amorkor Sykes, and four children, Cynthia Omaboe, Mavis Amoa, Vincent Sykes, and Frank Sykes.
