Auditor- General on Police Bail

The Auditor General, Mr Osei Tutu Prempeh was arrested on Friday for keeping a number of classified state documents in his house in contravention of official regulations relating to the handling of vital state documents.

A release from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) said "a team of BNI operatives conducted a search at Mr Prempeh's residence at the Airport Residential Area, Accra on Friday between 1105 hours and 1230 hours". It said the "search was conducted with a warrant in the presence of Mr Prempeh himself, his wife, Mrs Pamela Prempeh and an independent witness of Mr Prempeh's choice in the person of Mr Sam Opoku of the Institute of Economic Affairs.

"Thirty-nine pieces of vital state document were retrieved from Mr Prempeh's room during the search". The documents included "Reports of Auditor-General Public Accounts" and "Statement of Foreign Exchange Receipts and payments of the Bank of Ghana"

The statement said the BNI is investigating Mr Prempeh's motive "for deliberately contravening official regulations related to the handling of vital state documents".

Mr Prempeh has been granted bail and is to report on Tuesday.
