Sunyani Street named after Minister

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo), 23 April, The Sunyani traditional council has named one of the major streets in Sunyani after Mr. J.H. Owusu-Acheampong, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in recognition of his contribution to the development of the traditional area when he was the Brong Ahafo Regional Secretary. The one kilometre long dual carriage stretches from the round about at the regional office of the Ghana Food Distribution Corporation through the Bosoma weekly market up to the Sunyani-Chiraa-Techiman main road. At a ceremony to formally name the street after him, the Paramount Chief of Sunyani, Nana Asor Bosoma Nkrawiri, said the traditional council was moved to honour Mr. Owusu-Acheampong because he was instrumental in getting the Sunyani stool elevated to a paramountcy in 1989. "This feat was achieved against the background that Regional Ministers preceding him woefully failed to deliver on their numerous pledges and assurances that the stool would be elevated. Nana Asor Nkrawiri said despite the fact that Mr. Owusu-Acheampong is not a citizen of Sunyani, he worked tirelessly to bring unprecedented development including a four-kilometre street project, which was the envy of all regional capitals. "It is for these reasons and others that the traditional council in conjunction with the District Assembly decided to name this street after Owusu Acheampong to honour him so as to inspire others to be of greater service to their communities and the country", he stated. Mr. Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, Sunyani District Chief Executive, said Mr. Owusu-Acheampong has so far been the only regional minister to serve for over five years. It is important for the achievements of the people to be recognised during their lifetime rather than to be awarded posthumously. While commending the chiefs for appreciating his efforts. Mr.Owusu-Acheampong thanked President Rawlings for giving him the opportunity to serve his region. There are a lot to be done by the government to alleviate poverty, diseases and ignorance, which are still prevalent especially in the rural areas. "There is a lot of work to be done in this country. We need to do more for our people but what is needed most is peace and stability to enable us to move forward as nation", he declared. Mr Owusu-Acheampong presented assorted drinks, a ram and 500,000 cedis to the chiefs in appreciation of the honour done him.
