The Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, has questioned the motive behind the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) decision to investigate his honorary title.
According to him, GTEC appears to be influenced by certain shadowy individuals, whom he alleges are targeting only members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a video shared by Channel One TV on Friday, June 20, 2025, on Facebook, the lawmaker acknowledged that his ‘Dr’ title was not earned through academic study, but clarified that it was conferred in recognition of his contributions to society.
“I didn’t earn anything by myself. You [media] were there when they honored me because they saw all the work we are doing. It wasn’t earned academically, that is why on my website, I haven’t put that title there. I wonder why GTEC seems to be targeting only NDC people. Are they NPP? Who is influencing them to do that?" he said.
De-Graft Paitoo further criticised GTEC’s public approach of naming individuals and questioning their credentials, arguing that the commission should have formally issued letters inviting them to engage, rather than failing to follow due process.
He added that he has consulted his lawyers on the matter and hinted at the possibility of taking legal action against the commission.
“If you want to invite us for questioning, write to us personally, but they gave it to the media to cause conversations. I have given it to my lawyer, he will answe,r and when he does, I will later come out and explain things,” he added.
His response comes amid GTEC’s crackdown on the misuse of unearned academic titles.
According to a previous report by graphic.com.gh, the commission formally wrote to the Gomoa East lawmaker and others on June 16, 2025, directing them to cease using the title “Doctor” (Dr) in all official and public communications, citing a lack of verifiable academic credentials to justify its use.
GTEC also demanded that he disclose whether the title was earned or honorary, name the awarding institution, and outline the conferment process.
GTEC warned that failure to comply could result in sanctions, as empowered by its regulatory authority, with a deadline for response set for June 30, 2025.
