Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reiterated that unity remains the most critical factor for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral success, warning that persistent internal divisions could derail the party’s bid to return to power in 2028.
According to an adomonline.com report on February 2, 2026, Afenyo-Markin urged party members at all levels to put aside personal and factional interests and rally solidly behind the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He explained that the NPP’s electoral history clearly shows a strong link between internal cohesion and victory, noting that the party has suffered defeats whenever disunity and infighting overshadowed its campaign efforts.
“Elections lost in 1979, 1992, 1996, 2008 and 2012 were largely influenced by factionalism within the party,” the report said.
Dr Bawumia reiterates call for unity as party stalwarts throng his home to congratulate him
Afenyo-Markin cautioned against a recurrence of the 2024 elections, highlighting ‘skirt and blouse’ voting as a damaging practice that weakened the party’s overall performance at the polls.
He stressed that such conduct sends mixed signals to voters and undermines the party’s collective message.
Afenyo-Markin therefore called for a united front, urging members to consistently promote the party’s vision and effectively communicate Dr Bawumia’s policies and agenda at the grassroots.
He contrasted the party’s past setbacks with its victories in the 2000, 2004, 2016 and 2020 general elections, attributing those successes to teamwork, discipline and a shared sense of purpose.
He appealed to party supporters nationwide to fully commit to Dr Bawumia’s leadership, warning that failure to unite behind the flagbearer could seriously jeopardise the NPP’s chances in the 2028 general elections.
