Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, filed a judicial review application challenging her removal as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Citing grounds of illegality by the president and a lack of jurisdiction, the former Chief Justice sought four key reliefs, including a declaration that President John Dramani Mahama had no power to remove her as a Superior Court Justice without adhering to the procedure set out in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

She further asked the court to rule that the September 1, 2025, warrant of removal signed by the president for her removal as Chief Justice and a Justice of the Supreme Court was “unlawful, null, void, and of no effect”.

She also prayed the court to quash the warrant.

President Mahama signed a warrant of removal against Madam Torkornoo following an inquiry under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

Petitions alleging “stated misbehavior” and misuse of public funds, filed by citizens including Daniel Ofori in March 2025, prompted her suspension in April 2025 and the formation of a five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang.

The committee’s report confirmed the grounds for her removal, marking the first dismissal of a sitting Chief Justice in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
