WBC saddened by referee Cobblah's death

Accra, Jan 3, GNA - The World Boxing Council (WBC) has said it is saddened by the cruel death of Mr Godfrey Cobblah, a WBC licensed referee/judge.

It therefore called on all boxing lovers to form a united front to seek justice and bring the culprits to book.

Mr Cobblah, who is a senior administrator of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) was gunned down on December 26, 2005 by land guards at Achiaman, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region while on official duties as the President of the IRS Welfare Committee.

A statement signed by Jose Sulaiman, President of WBC copied through the Africa Boxing Union said, "I am saddened by the news of the passing away of our beloved friend who was assassinated in such a cowardly way".

It said the WBC would make a strong and respectful request to the government of Ghana to bring those who committed the crime to book to ensure justice.

"These are times when all boxing people must come together to demand the implementation of justice while letting all know that members of the WBC will closely observe the steps being taken for the sake of ensuring justice", the statement added.

The statement described referee Cobblah as a WBC loyalist and expressed its deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased and the entire boxing fraternity in Ghana.
