Gyanagyanadze (C/R) Oct. 24, GNA - The chief of Gyanagyanadze near Winneba, Nana Ekwame Gyanagyanadze II, on Saturday appealed to the government to extend pipe-borne water to the rural areas of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya district.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Gyanagyanadze, he said because the people in the area were buying a bucket of water for 1,000 cedis, while those unable to afford have resorted to stagnant unsafe water in the bush.
He said the water problem had forced many of the youth to leave to the urban area, adding that, the situation had affected the development of the area.
The Chief pointed out the area was about three kilometres from Winneba, which had a Water Station and expressed regret that they have not been connected to enjoy pipe-bone water. He therefore suggested to the District Assembly to provide tanks in the communities as solution until the area was provided with pipe-borne water.
Mr. John Mensah, District Manager of the Ghana Water Company, said it was the intention of the company to extend water to the communities but lack of funds had delayed the idea. He said that the new station with the capacity for about 3.2 million gallons of water daily was currently supplying only 1.2 million gallons.
Mr. Mensah said that some sold pipe-lines to the communities were being tested and those found to be in good condition would be used to supply water to the areas. 24 Oct 04
