The Deputy Bono Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Eric Adjei, has asserted that the continuous stay of Dr. Peter Appiahene at the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) is likely to cause problems for the country.

According to him, the actions of Dr. Appiahene, a known member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who was appointed as a deputy commissioner of the EC, since his appointment has not shown that he would not be doing the bidding of his party at the commission.

He said that the deputy EC commissioner was at a recent campaign event of the NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), which according to him is totally wrong.

"What they are doing is creating a monster for the future. Because you can't tell me that after doing everything you want and the election is over, the clergy would go round speaking about peace.

"Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia went to meet small-scale miners during his campaign tour, and I saw Appiahene there. The excuse given was that he is a lecturer at UENR and he was accompanying the vice-chancellor. Even the Bible says that 'we are allowed to do anything, but not everything is good for us to do'," Adjei said in Twi during a panel discussion on Ark FM on May 14, 2024.

He added, "The fact that you are even a matter of contention in the country, you should not even go near a flag of the NPP. When Bawumia went to meet the small-scale miners, did he not go to speak about the interest of his political party? Have you ever seen Afari-Gyan at any political programme organised by Legon?"

The NPP panellist on the programme, Gabriel Korang Ababio, the Bono Regional Communication officer of the party, said that there was nothing wrong with Dr. Appiahene attending the campaign event.

He made the point that the EC commissioner is a lecturer and the head of the Department of Computer Science and Informatics at UENR and was at the event on behalf of the university.

He accused the NDC of being hypocritical with their actions on Dr. Appiahene’s appointment because known members of the party have been appointed to be EC commissioners when they were in power.
