Electricity tariff increase won't take effect now - PURC

Electricity consumers can heave a sigh of relief, at least in the short term, as the proposed upward tariff adjustment will not be implemented any time soon.

This is according to an announcement from Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) who indicate that stabilising the current supply remains their key focus.

Ghana's energy sector has come under intense pressure in recent months forcing utility providers to roll out a load-shedding exercise.

The VRA therefore suggested that while working to increase power supply to electricity consumers, there is the need for an increment in electricity tariffs to enable the Authority efficiently provide consumers with electricity and also to help solve the current power crisis.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the PURC Nana Yaa Gyantua said the Commission’s major concern was stabilising the current energy situation and not increasing tariffs.

“We are not talking about tariffs now… Our focus is to make sure that all these problems with the system are stabilized. We haven’t started with anybody because there are issues that we have to deal with," she said.
