EC boss ‘cheeky, trivial’ sometimes – Gyampo

Charlotte Osei - Chairperson of the EC Charlotte Osei - Chairperson of the EC

The Chair of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei, is sometimes “cheeky” with her answers to critical and important issues that have to do with Ghana’s electoral processes, political science lecturer Dr Ransford Gyampo has observed.

“Sometimes listening to the woman, the chairperson, there is always the tendency for the EC to trivialise issues that are of utmost importance to Ghanaians, sometimes she sound cheeky,” Dr Gyampo told Emefa Apawu on Class News’ 505 programme on Tuesday April 26.

Making reference to Mrs Osei’s comments on Tuesday about the EC’s new controversial logo that “we liked it, we picked it and it makes us happy,” Dr Gyampo said: “This is a cheeky response and cheeky assertion and I think issues about electoral politics and electoral processes are issues that are core, and issues that are dear to the heart of many Ghanaians, so, it’s important that when those issues are being addressed in public,…some of these utterances, some of these cheeky responses must be minimised.”

At an event in Accra where the EC launched its five-year strategic plan, Mrs Osei also said the electoral body chose to have a new logo without Ghana’s Coat of Arms because the EC wanted to assert its independence of the state.

However, Dr Gyampo said he felt “disappointed” by Mrs Osei’s justification, since, in his view, having the Coat of Arms on the EC’s logo as existed in the old logo, did not mean the EC was not independent of the state.
