German Embassy donates sports equipment

Accra, March 2, GNA - The German Embassy has presented a number of sports equipment to the Street Academy in Accra in support of its sporting programme to mark the 50th independence celebrations.

The sports items include a set of jerseys and goalkeepers training kit and gloves, four footballs, sports bag, two ball nets, a pump, stop watch and whistle and 11 T-shirts worth about six million cedis. Ms Dagmar Traub-Evans, Head of the Economic, Cultural and Press Affairs of the German Embassy who made the presentation in Accra said the Embassy shares with the developmental needs of the children and hope the donation would help them socialize and lead upright lives. She said the Embassy's avowed aim is to assist the vulnerable in the society and offer support in areas such as education, health and recreation and sporting activities to ensure the socio- economic development of the society and its people.

Ms Traub-Evans urged the children of the Academy to be serious about the informal training and vocations offered them as well as the sporting activities so as to be better placed in the society.

She called on the children of the Academy to make use of the items by training hard in all sports disciplines to chalk success. Mr Ataa Lartey, Director of the Street Academy thanked the Embassy for making the donation adding that it has come at the opportune time to give the children the spirit of belongingness.

He said he hopes the items would also ginger up the children as they prepare to face the Accra Old Stars Club in an anniversary friendly football match on March 10 as part of the activities to mark the 50th independence anniversary.

Present at the ceremony were Ms Ruth Mensah, Public Relations Officer of the German Embassy, Miss Joana Ofori, Project Co-ordinator of the Street Academy and some children of the Academy.
