Dumelo’s campaign message was 'so unconvincing' - Lecturer

A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Evans Aggrey-Darko has indicated that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) should have coached actor, John Dumelo on how to speak at a campaign rally.

According to Dr Aggrey-Darko, Dumelo’s address given at the Cape Coast stadium during the launch of the party’s campaign did not resonate to him as a political scientist.

The actor after mounting the stage urged the youth in the New Patriotic Party to join the NDC since the NDC provides better opportunities for the young.

He further shared his experience after he joined the NDC.

“I decided to join the NDC after I met a certain group of people whose message didn’t convince m… Some people are promising hope but President John Dramani Mahama is already doing that, so what else are they going to do? When I decided to join the NDC, my parents were insulted but I didn’t mind because I knew it was the best party for me.

“I will use this platform to urge all the youth in the New Patriotic Party to come join the NDC because the time is now and this is a party that provides opportunities for both the young and old.

“If you want Ghana to move forward, come to NDC because we are the party that would move Ghana forward from now to eternity,” John Dumelo said.

But speaking on Oman FM, Monday, Dr Aggrey-Darko said the actor was not convincing enough.

“Apart from the fact that he’s a star, his statement was so unconvincing. They should have trained him. If find yourself in a campaign crowd, you should be able to excite the crowd. At that level, they want something good to listen to,” he intimated.

Touching on the decision to allow the actor speak after Flt. Lit. Jerry John Rawlings, founder of the party, Dr Aggery-Darko stated that he was surprised at the incident.

According to him, it has always been the case that a crowd is addressed in a hierarchical manner.

“When the former president [Rawlings] spoke, I was thinking the chairman or key executives will follow. When John Dumelo followed, some of us concluded they weren’t following a particular order…” he noted.
