Dr Opoku Prempeh admits NPP 'broke trust' with grassroots, citizens

Former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has acknowledged that a breakdown of trust between the government and the citizenry contributed significantly to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

In a viral video shared on X on November 19, 2025, Dr Opoku Prempeh said ten months of reflection had led him to conclude that the party failed to maintain the confidence of Ghanaians.

He explained that the trust deficit stemmed largely from the government’s inability to listen adequately to public concerns and its tendency to make assumptions.

“One thing I’ve come to a conclusion on in the last 10 months is that there was a broken trust between citizens and government. The trust that was broken hurt so much so that we saw the results. We didn’t listen enough. We assumed a lot of things we shouldn’t have assumed,” he stated.

Dr Opoku Prempeh further noted that the government’s challenges were worsened by an extremely difficult global climate, both economically and medically, which disrupted economies worldwide.

He pointed to supply chain disruptions as a major pressure point, citing the steep rise in shipping costs.

“A container from China that cost 1,200 in logistics charges had risen to 14,000. People’s lifetime savings had been wiped out,” he indicated.

According to him, the health crisis during the pandemic also left deep scars, with unprecedented levels of loss.

“People died in their droves in ways never seen before, without a military crisis or world war. A lot happened,” he stressed.

Dr Opoku Prempeh said these combined factors strained the government’s relationship with the public and ultimately influenced voter behaviour in the 2024 elections.
