The Minister of Defence-Designate, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has urged Ghanaians not to pursue enlistments into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) unless they meet the necessary qualifications.
This advise was given during his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, January 28.
Drawing from his dual background as a medical professional and his familiarity with GAF operations, Dr. Omane Boamah warned that ignoring the recruitment protocols could lead to dire consequences.
"Knowing the Ghana Armed Forces that I know and from where I sat about 17 years ago, if you succumb to the procedures and rules of engagement and get enlisted, you are likely to suffer. Some recruits even die at training," he stated.
He emphasised that the rigorous standards of the GAF are crucial for safeguarding the physical, mental, and emotional health of its members, as well as maintaining the operational excellence of the forces.
As a medical doctor, Dr. Omane Boamah reiterated his commitment to ensuring that only those who meet the criteria join the ranks of the GAF.
He stated, "I will be the first to advise such a person not to do so," highlighting his stance on the importance of following the established recruitment guidelines.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who is the current Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress, is a former Minister of Communications and spokesperson to the president.
He has also served as Deputy Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, as well as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports.
